Designing a new dementia & carer space with the National Trust

We were commissioned by the National Trust to support their EU funded (Interreg) project called MONUMENT (MOre NUrturing and More Empowerment Nested in Technology). Working with colleagues from across Europe, the National Trust is transforming the old Reed Barn at Peckover House, in Wisbech, into a space for people living with dementia and their informal carers, inspired by the Odense Model of dementia day care that has been pioneered in Holland.

Re-Designing new models of Care.

In our first Ageable year we were approached by Chemistry to contribute to a winning tender to develop a new service offer for a new later-life player Guild Living UK on the market. This would be delivering together a series of service blueprints for a new type of later life option being developed and since then I was hooked! The bid was successful and it was such an exciting opportunity for Ageable to influence and contribute to this collaboration.

Relish App.

Embracing Relish’s opportunities for innovations beyond physical products by taking a holistic service & business perspective bringing together customer and company need. Her last project as Head of Design was leading a subscription service for customers.

Part of this was using her ‘service hat’ to ensure that she brought together a vision of a strong idea, shared delivery through digital, design, business & content that is high-quality.

Innovation Toolkit

Alice created a London wide movement of care home managers with My Home Life to maintain and support a movement of managers in London to best share and learn from each other in their roles as care home managers.

As part of this Alice designed a toolkit that was delivered to over 1,700 care homes in London.
This toolkit supports staff in care homes to have conversations with relatives, residents and staff in order to gain their experiences of the home, and ask them what can be done to improve it.

Spots of Time.

As Creative Director of this social enterprise with a mission to make it easier for people to put their spare ‘spots of time’ for good. Alice led setting up the volunteering service and trialing it across 12 care homes across Essex and London, to learn and iterate what works.

This resulted in designing a range of fun, activities for care homes to enable volunteers in care homes to improve well being of residents in our pilot.

Dementia Advisor Service

As part of Alice’s role working with thinkpublic - This project was a partnership with the Alzheimers Society, Dott07, Design Council. Working closely with all those that dementia effects, she collaborated to design ways to improve people with dementia’s daily life in the North East which led to the co-design of
‘The Dementia Advisor Service’, this is now rolled out nationally.
Alice designed the dementia directors kit, which trained carers and people living with dementia how to interview and film each other to identify their own insights that led to the design stage of the work in a participatory and reciprocal way. See the film here.
